Following the Hidden Trail of Ancient Maya ruins

In summer of 2011, Illinois-based writer and journalist Derek Monroe has taken a 6000 mile journey from Chicago to Mexico to visit ancient Maya sites which lay off the beaten path of tourist trails. Instead of visiting sites besieged by crowds of Cancun resorts-based day trippers, he visited sites well hidden in a jungle and accessible by back roads and rivers such as Calakmul, Xiaotitlan and Ruta Puuc. The result is amazing array of experiences based not only on archaeological sites themselves, on but wealth and richness of human experience that made the trip an experience of a lifetime.
